Here are a couple new theories

John born 1747, may have had a son in Scotland whom he named John before he came to America

John from Scotland's  father may have been :  John born 1712 in Derry, Ireland or John born 1724 in Ireland

I have come to an impasse here. There just seems to be too many Johns born on the first half of the 1700's in Scotland and Ireland. I do believe however,  that a John Dobbins came to Virginia and  another John Dobbins came to North Carolina

I previously stated that John Dobbins was born in Scotland in 1747. I found this on a source on the Internet, but have not been able to verify it. I recently received an interesting e-mail which suggests otherwise

"I believe John was not from Scotland, but, Ireland. He was born in County Antrim, near Connagher or Carrickfergus. I also believe his father's name was John too. I have found some Dobbins in the Carrickfergus area, by church records and such."

I want to say THANK YOU to everyone who has been generous enough to contribute their time and information to my site.

Thanks a lot to Don Norman's work

Here is a very interesting article concerning the origin of the Dobbins name and it's different variations

And....

Several years ago, I spoke to Dr. Randy Lee Eickhoff, author of a translation of Cooleys Cattle Raid titled The Raid, who has a PhD in Ancient Celtic Languages and teaches at the University of Texas at El Paso.
He pointed out that Dubh Penn means Dark Head in the Brythonic branch of Celtic (still spoken in Wales and Brittany) and that Julius Caesar's De Bello Gallo mentioned a Celtic tribe in Britannia that he called the Dobunni.  It is a Latin corruption of Dubh Penn.

The Dobunni worshiped Epona, the Celtic goddess of horses, and they created the giant White Horse landscape sculpture in Oxfordshire.  It is not coincidence that horses in Great Britain are frequently named Dobbin.

Dr. Eickhoff has no doubt that Dobbins is a Celtic name derived from the tribe.

As an aside, note that the Norman, Robert LeClare, known as Strongbow, recruited Celtic tribes for his invasion and conquest of Uster.  For 17 generations, Dobbins were the Sheriffs and mayors of his castle at Carrickfergus.

I am looking for the book "My Family History" by Mary (Rollyson) Moeck. I would like any information on getting it, if someone could supply it please! According to it, Elizabeth Keener was kidnapped by Indians when she was a small child. When she was about 15, some settlers found her and returned her to her father Samuel Keener.

I was contacted by the Author. There is apparently not a lot more than this there. Thank you Mrs. Moeck

Here is some interesting information about John and Elizabeth from a Keener Web Site

Thanks John !

It is not known when he came to America, but he enlisted in the Continental Army and served in the Revolution in the Fourth Pennsylvania Regiment under Captain James Taylor and General Anthony Wayne. After the war, John went to South western Pennsylvania, where he married Elizabeth Keener in 1784. Elizabeth, a daughter of Samuel Keener, was born in Woodstock, VA. The family moved to Patterson Creek, Hampshire County VA (WV) where their only child was born in 1786. They later moved to O'Brien's Fork of Steer Creek in Braxton County VA (WV) where John died April 3, 1833.

Here is a letter I received, expounding on these details

I plan to start updating this page, and I also have decided to link to new pages created as I receive information on other branches of the Dobbins line. I guess this domain is as good as any place for it! Any questions, information, suggestions, or help will be greatly appreciated. But PLEASE, I do not plan on branching out further than two generations outside the Dobbins surname. Sorry, but I just do not have the time to get any more extensive than that now. I will gladly take the information, but do not plan on posting it at this time.

Thanx!! Chuck
